Quattro earns its keep in hill country

If you want an Audi for the roads between here and Atlanta, quattro is the honest reason, and it is a good one. All wheel drive does its best work on a wet climb, and northwest Georgia has those in quantity. Be clear about what it is doing, though. It helps the car get moving and helps it hold a line under power. It does nothing for braking, and it will not shorten a stop on a slick grade. Tires decide that, on an Audi the same as on anything else.

The capability comes with a discipline attached. A quattro system wants all four tires close in circumference, which in practice means buying them as a set and matching the model rather than filling in one corner with whatever is cheapest. A real difference in tread depth across the car leaves the center differential fighting itself. It is also useful to know which arrangement the car has. The longitudinal models, the A4, A6 and Q5 among them, ran a mechanical center differential for years, though from about 2017 many of them switched to a clutch pack that sends drive to the front until the car needs more. The transverse models, including the A3 and Q3, use a Haldex clutch with a fluid service that comes due every forty thousand miles or so and gets skipped more often than not.

Neither arrangement is fragile. Both are entirely indifferent to being ignored.

Common questions

Do you have any used Audi right now?

Not right now, and honestly Audi is not a badge that lands here often. There are 41 other vehicles on the ground. If you want one specifically, (706) 237-7207 is the number and we can go looking.

Can you find a specific Audi for me?

Often, yes. Tell us the model, the rough year and what you want to spend, and we will keep an eye out. We buy at auction and take trades weekly, so things come through regularly.

Are your Audi clean title?

Yes, and that is lot policy rather than luck: every vehicle here has a clean title and no reported frame damage before it goes up for sale. The paperwork is there on request.
