Packaging is the unglamorous word for what Honda does better than most of the segment. It means getting usable room out of fixed outside dimensions, and the company has treated it as a first principle under an internal phrase that translates roughly as maximum space for people, minimum space for machinery. It shows up in ordinary places. Door openings that are square rather than stylish. A low cowl and slim pillars that make the car easy to place on a narrow road. A back seat in a compact car that an adult can sit in.
The clearest example is the Fit, which carried its fuel tank under the front seats rather than the rear ones. That one decision freed the whole back of the car, and the rear seat bottoms flip up against the backs so a tall object can stand on the floor. Very little else that size does that. The same instinct scaled up gave the Odyssey a third row that folds into a well in the floor and disappears, and gave the CR-V, which is built on the Civic platform, a cargo hold out of proportion to how small it looks in a parking space.
That suits a particular buyer. Somebody who wants a car small enough to park downtown but still has to move a bicycle, a dresser, or two children and their gear, and does not want a truck to do it.
