Used Honda in Rome, Georgia

Mileage is the first thing most people look at, and on a Honda it is the least reliable number on the window. A four cylinder Accord or Civic that spent its life running the interstate to Atlanta and back can be in better mechanical shape at 140,000 miles than a car of the same year that never left town. Highway miles are gentle miles. What tells you which one you have is the physical wear: the driver's seat bolster, the shine worn into the steering wheel, the pedal rubbers, the way the tires have worn. If that looks harder used than the number suggests, believe the wear.

The other thing a Georgia commute punishes is the air conditioning. Compressor failure is a known weak point on Civics, Accords and CR-Vs from roughly the mid 2000s through the mid 2010s, and traffic on a July afternoon is the hardest work an air conditioning system ever does. Test it at idle with the engine fully warm, not just at forty miles per hour with air forcing through the condenser, and watch whether the vents stay cold while the car is stopped.

On the four cylinder engines of that era, a short rattle in the first second after a cold start is usually the variable timing actuator rather than the bottom end. You would still rather hear it in the parking lot than three weeks later.
