Most manufacturers quietly abandoned the small, inexpensive car, and Mitsubishi stayed in that segment longer than almost anyone. The lineup is short and built around compact and subcompact crossovers, with a genuinely small car in it for as long as the company kept building one. That focus, plus a dealer network that is modest by mainstream standards, is the whole reason the badge is uncommon in this part of Georgia. Uncommon is not the same as wrong.
The company behind them is more interesting than the badge suggests. Mitsubishi campaigned the Pajero at the Dakar Rally and won the world rally manufacturers' championship with the Lancer Evolution in 1998. The current business is quieter and sits inside the alliance with Nissan and Renault, which is why the newest Outlander is built on the same platform as the Nissan Rogue.
The Mirage was about as frugal as a gasoline car could be without a hybrid system in it, and the Outlander Sport asks less than most compact crossovers do. For a long commute, that combination is a real argument, and anybody shopping on economy rather than image should have the brand on the list.
