This market buys full size trucks and body on frame SUVs, Mazda builds neither, and the people who do own a CX-5 or a Mazda3 here tend to keep them well past the age at which most vehicles change hands.
Going out of your way to find one is defensible for a single reason: a Mazda drives noticeably better than its price segment implies. Steering weight, body control and where the driver sits are where the company spends its effort, and that shows up most on a long trip. A compact crossover that settles down and stays quiet at highway speed is worth more to somebody commuting toward Atlanta than another row of features would be.
The longer term argument is the engine. While most of the segment downsized and added turbochargers, Mazda kept a larger naturally aspirated four as its volume engine and chased efficiency through compression instead. A turbo version exists, but it is not what most of them left the factory with. Fewer boost components and no intercooler plumbing is a real advantage on a vehicle already carrying a hundred thousand miles, and any competent shop can work on one.
