Almost everything a driver notices about a BMW follows from one decision made a long time ago. The engine sits lengthwise, set back behind the front axle, and it drives the rear wheels. That is why the hood is long and the cabin sits well back, why the company talks constantly about how weight is divided between the two ends of the car, and why the driver is placed low with the wheel close. None of that is styling. It is what the rest of the car is arranged around.
The slogan BMW has used in America since the mid 1970s names an engineering priority rather than a mood, which is unusual for advertising. What it delivers is a car that feels settled at speed and truthful when a road starts to bend, and northwest Georgia has more of those roads than most of the state. What it does not deliver is a tall seat, a soft ride, or any interest in going unnoticed. A BMW asks something of the person driving, and gives it back.
Not every car with the badge is built on that plan. The 2 Series Gran Coupe and, since 2016, the X1 mount the engine sideways and drive the front wheels, on architecture shared with MINI, which BMW owns. They are a different engineering argument from a 3 Series, and the badge by itself does not separate the two.
