Subaru puts all wheel drive under nearly everything it builds, and that is genuinely unusual. At most companies it is an option box on selected trims. At Subaru it is the default, and the rear drive sports car is the only gasoline model in the American range without it. The commitment is old. Subaru has used a flat engine since the 1960s, and a car built around one sits lower and carries its weight closer to the centerline than most of what it competes with.
The usual argument for all wheel drive is snow, and that argument does not carry much weight in Floyd County. The local case is different. Wet pavement after a summer storm, a gravel or dirt drive that softens when it rains, a wet grass field at a ball park, and the grades that come with living in the foothills. Traction off the line in those conditions is where the system earns its keep.
One thing should be said plainly. All wheel drive helps a car go. It does not help a car stop, which is a description of the system rather than a knock against it. Against that, the Outback is one of the more sensible shapes anybody sells: a wagon with real ground clearance rather than a tall crossover body, which means it rides like a car and still copes with a rough county road.
